KidBiz Contest

Hawaii Achieve3000 (better known as KidBiz 3000/TeenBiz3000) is running a contest on the students achievements for completing articles with 75% or better.  An email from Hawaii Achieve3000 is included:

  Your students have already begun progressing toward their title of Hawaii High Achievers! One class in each Complex Area, whose students complete the most multiple choice activities through January 6^th, will be chosen as a winner! The highest performing student in the winning class, along with his/her teacher, will be recognized at a special Awards Ceremony at our upcoming Hawaii Leadership Conference on February 17, 2011.”

Students on the BLOG  

We are opening up the blog to let kids have a public place to publish their writing and art work!  Your child will probably be asked by teachers to submit writing.  Please return the parent permission forms that went home.  Ultimately, parents can decide if they want their children to submit works or not.  If your kids want to write and submit their own stories or poems (maybe a fun activity during the break!), they can email submissions tolaiebulletin@gmail.com with the subject "BLOG."  Please include the child's name, grade, and teacher, and parent name.

Healthy Leis and Parties  

Did your Super Citizen sport a new, fashionable, healthy lei or non-food lei?  Email a picture tolaiebulletin@gmail.com, and your child will be entered to win a free dinner for two at Surfin' Tacos.  Also, think of a healthy holiday treat for class parties this week.  Take a picture, and then the whole class will get entered in the contest!!

Add a Gift to Your Shopping Cart  

The kids at La’ie Elementary are asking for recess equipment for a holiday gift.  As you're out shopping, or if you have any you would donate, you would definitely make Santa's "nice list" this year.  You can deliver your gift to the office to go in the PTCO recess bag.

Here are some ideas:

• A big plastic garbage can with wheels and a lid to hold all the equipment
• Rubber balls
• Kickball plastic bases
• Tennis balls or handballs
• Frisbee
• Jump ropes (large and small)

Geckos are ON-THE-MOVE

Thanks to Megan Hughes, Josh Nead, and the BYUH Med-club for initiating our lunch-time Geckos-on-the-Move track program.  The kids are having a blast running around the field.  There are no winners or losers, but there are prizes for everyone.  Did you know some of your kids run over a mile each time we set up the track? They are learning that ANYONE can run, walk, and groove their way around the track and be healthy with their friends.  If there are any other parents who would like to come once a week during lunch (about 11:15am - 12:30pm) and help pass out cards and count laps, email Emily Bradshaw at bradshaw.e@gmail.com.

Garden Gurus

Jack Johnson's Kokua Foundation is giving La’ie Elementary School a grant to help boost student participation in the garden (MAHALO!).  We are looking for parents, grandparents, or other community members who are willing to come in and work with two or three other parents to take classes to the garden.  The lesson plans are already designed by the Kokua Foundation.  They are fun, hands-on learning experiences for our children.  This is a once or twice a month commitment for two hours each time.  If you are interested, please contact Emily Bradshaw atbradshaw.e@gmail.com.  Spread the word to the gardeners you know!

Support the Ko’olauloa Sustainable Communities Plan, Support Envision La’ie

Tues., Dec. 7, Kahuku HS Café, Tailgate your dinner starting at 5:30pm, meeting starts at 6:30pm.Please be there to show your support. It’s important to get as many people out as possible.  Community members need to be there to register that support so the city planners get a confirmation that they have put forward a plan that addresses the needs of the people who live and work here.  You may sign up to testify, or you can just be there in a blue or white t-shirt.

Please bring your family and friends.  Carpool if possible, as parking is limited. Free blue t-shirts are available through HRI's front office. Ask for Kela.

Also, please go to www.envisionlaie.com and have each of your family members and friends submit a positive comment by clicking on the link there.  It will go to the city and be counted as part of the community input they are collecting on the plan.  While on the website, you can also sign up to receive the newsletter that goes out regularly to keep our supporters fully updated. HELP SAVE LIVES!

Please help support our bone marrow drive on Friday, December 10, 2010 from 12 noon to 6pm at the entrance of La’ie Foodland. This is an effort to increase the polynesian registry at the Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry. To see if you are a match will only require 5 minutes of your time, completion of paper work and a quick oral swab sample. Math Game 'Top It!'

Let's learn basic math skills by playing games. A simple game to play is called "Top It" (back in the day we called it "War"). You can use a regular set of cards (take out the suits).

A few tips before beginning:
1. Don't split up the deck of cards, just leave them in a pile in the center of the playing surface.
2. Decide how many cards each player will take? 2? 3? 4?
3. Decide what you are going to do with the digits displayed on the cards? Add them? Multiply? Subtract?
4. Decide if the winner is determined by the highest answer? lowest answer?
5. Be flexible with the rules.
Starting the game:
1. Each person draws the pre-determined number of cards. (see #2 above)
2. Each person figures out their answer. (see #3 above)
3. Winner gets all the cards. If there is a tie, draw a new set of cards and repeat the steps. Winner takes both sets of cards.
4. Repeat
5. Have fun!

PTCO Bulletin 11-30-10

CALENDAR

Wed., Dec. 1 - Evacuation Drill – LES will conduct a full campus evacuation drill at 8:15am on Dec. 1. Please have your children to school no later than 7:55am.

No one will be allowed on school campus once the drill begins.

In the event of an actual evacuation:

1. No one will return to the LES campus.

2. Teachers will notify parents of the evacuation from the evacuation site after all students are accounted for and instructions are given. (It is important that the school have current emergency contact info.)

3. Parents will be able to pick up their child(ren) from the evacuation site.

Wed., Dec. 1 – LES Christmas Program! 6pm at the CAC. Please be there by 5:30pm to check in with your child’s teacher, and so they can get settled before the performance begins!

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE

Children have been reported being seen in the front seats of cars, in the back of truck beds, and most shockingly on the rails of truck beds while being dropped off for school.

Please remember to obey the laws and keep children in the back seat until 12 years old (or 100 lbs). No one under 12 is allowed in the back of a truck, and, of course, on the rails of a truck bed.  

As mandated reporters, teachers and all school personnel are required to report these things if seen, as it is child endangerment.

Kahuku Elementary Fun Run/Walk

Kahuku Elementary is proud to announce its first annual holiday 5k/1 mile Fun Run/Walk at Gunstock Ranch on Saturday, December 4, at 7:00 a.m.  Every participant receives a t-shirt and a number for the lucky number drawing for prizes such as a surfboard, a Wii system with three games, a Nikon Camera, an Escape Club Membership at Turtle Bay which includes a one night stay and a round of golf.  Additional lucky number prizes include an iTouch, dinner for two at Palm Terrace, Dave and Buster Power cards and more. You can also purchase lucky numbers for $1 each and you DONT have to be present to win.

Keiki Kalikimaka contest

Calling all artists ages 12 and below! Kids, help us trim our pages with the holiday spirit. It's time for our annual Keiki Kalikimaka drawing contest. Design an ornament and you'll have a chance at our prizes of $100, $75 and $25 cash. We'll select a daily finalist, to be printed on Page 1 of the section beginning Nov. 26. On Christmas we'll run all 29 finalists and announce the randomly chosen winners. The contest is open to kids up to age 12. All entries must be between 5 and 8 inches wide. No 3-D entries (don't glue on any objects). We must receive your drawing in the mail -- no faxes or e-mails. Ornaments cannot be returned. Attach the entry form at left. The last day to enter is Dec. 20. Click HERE to print the entry form!

PAL Basketball

PAL basketball registration is now open to boys and girls ages 5 to 14 years old.  Register at the HRI office in the Laie Shopping Center.  The fee is $35 a player, families with 3 or more siblings registered pay $30 per child. Parents who volunteer to coach are waived the fee for 1 child.  1 waived fee per family.

Please register now because registration ends the first week of December!
