Halloween Parade

We had a great Halloween parade this morning.
Thank you to all who helped make this a success for our keiki.

Our costume theme was characters from your favorite book.

Ahh! A spider!

*Sniff, sniff* We were sad to end the parade early when the rain began.

PTCO UPDATE! Halloween Parade this Friday!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Halloween Parade this Friday!
Contrary to our last Naupaka newsletter, students will be allowed to wear masks with their Halloween costumes ONLY during the Halloween Parade on Friday, and not during the school day. Look-alike or toy weapons (e.g. guns, knives, swords) however, are prohibited.

The Halloween Parade will take place at 8:15 a.m.--9:00 a.m. on the usual assembly area, and not on Kamehameha Field. As usual, parents/guardians are welcome to attend.  A small memo informing parents/guardians of the changes will be sent home this week.

Have a safe Halloween!

Message from Mr. Ho
Last weeks unfortunate incident at Wahiwa Elementary School has reminded us that students and adults should be on campus at reasonable times, and when school faculty and staff are present. For the safety of our students, we encourage students to be on campus no earlier than 7:15 a.m., and should leave immediately after school. Although La`ie is a relatively safe and close knit community, we strongly encourage our students to be on campus when there is adequate and appropriate adult supervision.
Thank you.
~ Mr. Ho

Peanut Allergies and Raisinets
GLENDALE, Calif.— Nestle USA is recalling some packages Nestle Raisinets that may contain peanuts, putting those with an allergy at risk if they consume them.

The 10 oz. "fun size" bags were sold to Target, Shop Rite and Don Quixote stores in the U.S. The company says it has received three complaints.

Nestle says the recall only applies to candy with the 02015748 production code and UPC number of 2800010255.

The company is calculating the number of bags affected. No other Nestle products are affected.

People with peanut allergies are advised not to eat the candy. Purchasers can call Nestle at 1-800-478-5670 for a refund. The company says not to return the candy to stores.

La`ie Elementary has been nominated!
La`ie Elementary has been nominated for the 2011 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools Program. This prestigious program and recognition honors elementary schools that are either academically superior or demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement.

The Blue Ribbon School's Program recognizes schools that have at least 40% of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that dramatically improve student performance, and rewards schools that score in the top 10% on state assessments.

We will find out if LES will be identified as one of the three nominees for the State at a luncheon on November 1. To be recognized or even nominated as a Blue Ribbon School is attributed to the dedication and hard work by our faculty and staff, parents/guardians, community members, and students. Cross your fingers and keep up the good work!

 ~Mr. Ho

** The parents and teacher’s would also like to express how excited they are for the nomination, and recognize Mrs. Deborah Voorhies, who helped LES reach it’s nomination goal in 2007, and continued to help the school progress and earn nominations every year thereafter. We would also like to thank Mr. Matt Ho for helping LES progress even more, and providing an even stronger nomination this year! Thank you both so much for all you have done!

They would need to come a little early to set up and then make sure all the supplies get returned to their child's teacher.  If interested please call or email Joanie Ford (legendofthejojo@gmail.com or 561-8352)  Thanks!
We need one parent volunteer from each grade: 4th ,5th , and 6th  Monday – Friday for the times listed! Please contact me!

Bank for Education $100,000 gift to Hawaii school
-- What could Laie Elementary do with $100,000?  Let's find out!  Between now and Nov. 26, 2010, American Savings Bank is holding its "Bank for Education" competition.  Go to any branch location (there's one at Foodland), and open a free checking account.  FREE!  You can open as many as you'd like.  Once you get your debit card, you must have five transactions on the account for your account to count for our school.  Buy five packs of gum in separate transactions, and you're set!!!  You may close the account for no charge after 6 months.  This is something small parents could do to make A LOT OF MONEY for our school.  We got 4th place last year.  This year, 1st - 3rd places get cash awards.  Let's go for it!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Help your child think of someone at school who has made a difference to the "togetherness" of the school.  Nominate that person for an IMPACT award in the front office.

PROJECTS FOR THE SCHOOL: There are several projects that the school would like to have done.  These make great eagle projects, but would also be good for businesses, families, or youth groups in the area.  If you would like to help, please contact Mr. Ho for some suggested projects, and submit a one-page proposal at the main office.

Moms and aunties working hard behind the scenes.
Treasure Dancers..."ooo la la!"

Our school could win $100,000!  Last year we were 4th place, but this year we could win.  The school with the most new bank accounts added during American Saving's Bank's new member drive wins!  If you are interested, open an account (or two!--there is no limit) with American Savings Bank.  When you get the debit card, complete five transactions (could be as little as 5 packs of gum, purchased in 5 separate transactions).  The account needs to stay open for 6 months.  You can open an account at any ASB location. We got so close last year.  Let's give it another shot!

We Need your Campbell’s Soup Labels!
There is a canister in the office for collecting Campbell's Soup labels.  These labels allow us to buy supplies for our school.  So if you're buying Campbell's soup, please hang on to the labels and bring them to the office!

Island Halloween Events!

PCC’s Haunted Lagoon
The Polynesian Cultural Center will be having their annual Haunted Lagoon Ride until October 30th !  The Haunted Lagoon is not for the faint of heart, so the PCC also offers milder “keiki canoes” for family members of all ages. Aboard each keiki canoe is a “lost warrior” who carries a mystical light staff that repels monsters or creatures, including the ghostly Lā‘ie Lady. Keikis will also be able to enjoy our feature film presentation, contests, and activities while waiting for the Haunted Lagoon Ride.
Keiki Canoe Rides will run from 6:30pm - 7:30pm.
Please call 293.3333 for more info.

Pumpkin Patch at Aloun Farms

It is more cost effective to go as a school group, but the rides, food, and petting zoo will not be there yet.
